Who can apply for temporary residence?
Temporary residence is meant for foreigners, who are EU citizens or who are family members of an EU citizen. A certificate of temporary residence is issued for foreigners who want to stay in the territory of the Czech Republic for more than 3 months. One of the requirements for obtaining the certificate of temporary residence is that the applicant has never threatened state security or public order.
The certificate of temporary residence is voluntary and is issued based on the request of the EU citizen who stays in the Czech Republic.
Health insurance for foreigners with temporary residence in the Czech Republic
Foreigners who are family members of EU citizen have to have commercial health insurance for foreigners. EU citizen do not have to have health insurance for foreigners but it is recommended to have because European health insurance do not cover preventive check ups but only acute and emergency help.

Why should I apply for temporary residence when it is not compulsory?
EU citizens can stay in the territory of the Czech Republic even without a Visa, but still we recommend applying for the temporary residence for several reasons.
The certificate of temporary residence is necessary, when the EU citizen would like to:
- register his car to obtain a Czech registration number
- apply for a loan or mortgage at the bank
- conclude a contract with some of the mobile operators or internet providers

Where should I submit the application form?
The application for temporary residence can be submitted in any department of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. We recommend to submit it in the department which is the nearest to your home address, in case further procedures will be required.
How long does the procedure take?
The application is handled at the latest within thirty days from the beginning of the procedure. In case of approval, you will be then informed to collect the Certificate of temporary residence.

Application requirements for temporary residence for EU citizens

In case you are an EU citizen and are applying for permanent residence for a family member, who is not an EU citizen and wants to stay with you in the territory of the Czech Republic for more than 3 months, you have to apply for the permanent residence within 3 months from the day they entered the territory of the Czech Republic.

- Document which confirms that he is a family member of an EU citizen or an adult dependent

- Proof of arranged health insurance for foreigners

Important notes for the temporary residence
All the requirements for the application for temporary residence should not be older than 180 days, except the birth certificate and identity card.
Photos have to correspond with your real and actual appearance; we do not recommend using older photos.
All the documents have to be officially translated.
Certificate of stay of the family member of an EU citizen is usually issued for the same period as the stay of the EU citizen, who will host the family member. This period can be maximum 5 years.
The Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic issues the certificate as a card.
Rejection of the application for temporary residence of an EU citizen
(Rejection to issue the certificate of temporary residence)
The Ministry rejects the application for temporary residence if:
- Applicant becomes dependent on benefits for people with disabilities or jobs seekers allowance.
- Applicant threatens or there is a reasonable suspicion of possible threat to the security of the state or the applicant disturbed public order.
- Applicant is on the list of the undesirable people for the state and there is a reasonable suspicion of him threatening the security of the state.
Cancellation of the temporary residence of an EU citizen
The Ministry of Interior can cancel temporary residence of a citizen in the Czech Republic if:
- Citizen becomes dependent on benefits for people with disabilities or jobs seekers allowance.
- Citizen threatens or there is a reasonable suspicion of possible threat to the security of the state or the applicant disturbed public order.
- Citizen has highly contagious disease which can be widely spread. (It is applied only for disease which citizen caught at maximum three months after entrance to the Czech Republic)
Subsequently, Ministry of Interior decides deadline when you have to leave the Czech Republic.
Rejection of the application for temporary residence of family member of an EU citizen who is third country national
The reasons of the rejection of the application for temporary residence for family member of an EU citizen are similar as for an EU citizen. Additionally it also applies these cases:
- Applicant breaks the law by faking marriage for the purpose of getting the residence.
- Applicant refuses to go on the control interrogation
- Applicant is not a family member of an EU citizen, although he stated so in the application
Cancellation of the application for temporary residence of family member of an EU citizen who is third country national
The reasons of the cancellation of temporary residence for family member of an EU citizen are similar as for an EU citizen. Additionally it also applies these cases:
Ministry of Interior can cancel temporary residence if family member of EU citizen asks for that
Ministry of Interior also cancels residence for family member of EU citizen, if they stopped live together or If was temporary residence of EU citizen cancelled. This doesn’t apply if:
- Member of EU citizen bring up a child
- Citizen of EU died and family member of EU citizen lived in the Czech Republic more than one year
