Car insurance for foreigners living in the Czech Republic

Living in the Czech Republic Tips 18/08/2023 Natela Ismail

Compulsory liability insurance and accident insurance are important aspects of car insurance that also apply to Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic. Securing these types of insurance is essential for every vehicle owner to protect themselves from financial losses and legal complications in the event of a car accident or other damages.

Compulsory third party insurance is a statutory type of insurance that is required for every motor vehicle that is driven on public roads. Its purpose is to cover damages that the driver or owner of the vehicle may cause to other road users. This means that if you are in a car accident and you are the perpetrator, third party insurance can help pay for the cost of repairs to damaged vehicles, medical expenses, income replacement or other compensation to the injured party.

Therefore, for Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic, like all other drivers, it is obligatory to have compulsory third party insurance if you own and operate a motor vehicle. When arranging this insurance, it is important to provide all the necessary information about the vehicle and driver, including registration details and accident history. Regular premium payments are then necessary to keep this insurance in force.

Collision insurance is an optional form of insurance that provides coverage for the owner’s own vehicle. This insurance can cover damage caused by accident, vandalism, theft, damage from the elements and other perils. Collision insurance is useful for those who want to protect their vehicle and make themselves financially secure in the event of damage.

For Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic, collision insurance is optional but can be beneficial, especially if you own a newer and more valuable vehicle.

Add-on covers for car insurance

In addition to compulsory liability and accident insurance, there are several other types of insurance that may be useful for Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic. Here is an overview of some of these additional insurances:

  1. Breakdown insurance: this insurance provides protection in case your car has to be stopped and you are unable to use your car due to an accident or other event. It covers the cost of alternative transport, such as hiring a replacement vehicle, public transport or a taxi service.
  2. Theft insurance: This insurance covers financial losses caused by the theft of your vehicle. It covers the total value of the vehicle as well as other losses caused by theft, such as damage to the lock or equipment in the vehicle.
  3. Glass insurance: This insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing damaged glass on your vehicle. This can be front or rear glass, side windows or sunroof. Glass can be damaged, for example, by pebbles or an object hitting it.
  4. Assistance services:Some insurance companies offer extended assistance services that can help you in the event of an accident or technical problem with your car. This may include towing the vehicle, arranging accommodation, providing a replacement vehicle or helping to organise repairs.

It is important to consider your individual needs and financial capacity when choosing supplementary insurance. It’s also important to compare quotes from different insurers and get information on terms and conditions and premium levels to make sure you choose the best insurance for you and your vehicle.
