Yes, all foreigners staying in the Czech Republic are required to have valid health insurance, either through the public health insurance system or by purchasing commercial health insurance.
Public health insurance is available to those who meet specific legal requirements and is provided by seven public insurance companies. Commercial health insurance must be purchased individually from one of eight private insurers and offers either comprehensive or basic coverage options.
Foreigners can choose between two types of commercial health insurance:
Comprehensive health insurance, which covers a wide range of medical services and is necessary for obtaining a long-term visa or residence.
Acute and emergency health insurance, which covers basic urgent care, usually for short-term stays of up to 90 days.
Commercial health insurance is offered by companies such as IPA (AXA Group), Colonnade Insurance Company, pVZP, Maxima Insurance Company, SLAVIA Insurance Company, SV Insurance Company, UNIQA Insurance Company, and Vitalitas Insurance Company.
Comprehensive health insurance meets the legal requirements for long-term visas and residence permits, provides higher coverage limits, includes extended dental and medical care, and is recognized by the Czech Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
